MEDIA RELEASE
EMBARGOED UNTIL 11 AM JAN 4 2022
It is alarming and of increasing concern that Launceston’s City Council is so careless of what its constituents have invested in the city’s community assets and its cultural landscaping. All that is so in a financial sense not to mention the social and cultural values attached to the city’s ‘significant places’.York Park has a long and rich history and you do not need to be a FOOTYtragic to understand that and to want to see the place celebrated and valued.
To a great many Launcestonians it was something more than offensive to learn that yet again ‘the Council’ had given away ‘an asset’ for nothing on the pretext that ‘the place’ is surplus to requirement. It must be asked, on what grounds?
The argument seems to be something like, York Park’s operational costs are way too high. If anywhere is managed as a ‘cost centre’, as likely as not, that will always be the case if their social and cultural values are ignored.
.
Somewhat strangely up to now ratepayers have been told that every last cent invested in York Park as a place represented “value for money”.
Also, ratepayers have been told time and time again that York Park delivered an appropriate social cum financial dividend relative to ratepayers’ significant capital investment in the place along with the ongoing recurrent expenditure over time.
For all to see, the hubris and arrogance in what ‘Council’ has decided it could and would do on December 15 is palpable. Overconfidence tends to blur the risks. However, a sense of inferiority simply amplifies the negative possibilities.
The city’s citizens and ratepayers are not obliged to stand back and let this Council do what it imagines it can do with immunity.
There may be times when we cannot prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.
